Estreia em dose dupla

 O duo canadense/ucraniano, Ummagama, formado em 2003, fez uma estreia musical nada convencional. Em um momento em que muitas bandas têm dificuldades em lançar um registro, a banda é formada pelo casal Alexander Kretov (composição, instrumentos, arranjo, gravação, vocais) e  Shauna McLarnon (vocal, composição, letras), lançou dois discos ao mesmo tempo.

Um deles leva apenas o nome do duo e neste álbum, o ouvinte tem que esquecer  o óbvio. O duo canadense/ucraniano faz um som daqueles que é impossível você ouvir e rotulá-lo. Do indie rock a uma mistura de outros estilos que não tem como explicar, o ouvinte precisa ter a mente aberta para novas sonoridades, você tem que simplesmente ouvir e sentir a música.

Para onde o som pode te levar? Para qualquer lugar, sem definição de tempo e estilo. Do som mais simples ao complexo, passando por sons eletrônicos e violões, do inusitado ao flerte com o pop, folk e punk, devido a liberdade de criação.

Em uma época em que a maior parte das bandas investe em visual e clichês musicais, a Ummagma prefere seguir seu sentido e compor a música conforme ela pede, sem necessidade de ficar preocupada em agradar alguém, pois a música tem que ser composta de maneira natural e não em cálculos matemáticos, como discursos politicos.

Ouvir o registro da Ummagma é uma viagem, mas uma viagem que nos faz acreditar que um mundo mais livre e democrático é possível e que ainda existem pessoas procupadas em criar boas canções.

Antigravity/ Assim como o disco que leva o nome da banda, o álbum Antigravity tem vários estilos musicais reunidos de forma simples e com forte apelo emocional.Os arranjos são de primeira e a mistura de instrumentos acústicos com sons de sintetizadores, o som mais primal com o que de melhor a tecnologia pode proporcionar, dá uma característica muito pessoal ao disco.

Mas a msitura não tira o tom intimista do álbum e nem a capacidade que a dupla tem em, além da mistura, fazer novas experiências sonoras. Um dos destaques deste disco é a faixa 3, intitulada "Back to You", que lembra alguma coisa de Sonic Youth, principalmente com a versão que os estadunidenses fizeram para Superstar, do duo The Carpenters.

Em um período que o medo de ousar parece tomar conta de muitos músicos, a dupla passa longe e seus lançamentos tem muito poder para alcançar público em todo mundo, pois as canções são atemporais. Se você gosta de sons mais tranquilos e ousados, não perca tempo e corra atrás destes lançamentos.

Ummagma: Double album debut

The Canadian/Ukrainian duo Ummagma, formed in 2003, has effectively pulled off what can be truly considered an unconventional debut musical. At a time when many bands are facing difficulties when it comes to releasing a record, this band is formed by a couple – Alexander Kretov (who handles composition, instrumentation, arrangement, recording and vocals) and Shauna McLarnon (whose sphere is vocals, composition, lyrics) – who have, together as Ummagma, released two debut albums at the same time.

One of these LPs is the self-titled “Ummagma” and this album, the listener will find himself moving beyond what is plainly recognizable. The particular soundscapes created by this Canadian/ Ukrainian duo makes it virtually impossible to stick a single label or category on it. With music ranging from indie rock to a wide mixture of other styles that cannot be explained in words, the listener should ideally keep an open mind to the new sounds presented here; you only need to listen and feel the music.

Just where does this sound take you? It can be practically anywhere without limiting its road in terms of time or style. This band manages to make their music sound simple within what is actually complex by tastefully using electronic sounds and acoustic guitars and engaging in an extraordinary flirtation with pop, folk and punk genres, which is made possible by clearly exercising their creative freedom.

At a time when most bands tend to invest themselves in visual and musical clichés, the Ummagma duo prefers to pursue its real meaning by composing music that is well received, without getting worked up about it or worried about pleasing anyone, namely because their music apparently has to be composed in a natural way and not according to mathematical calculations, or even surrounding political dialogue.

While listening to Ummagma’s debut albums does take the listener on a journey, this happens to be one journey that makes us believe that it is possible to achieve a more free and democratic world and that there are still people out there who continue to be engaged in making great music.

The album “Antigravity”, just as the self-titled album “Ummagma”, bears a certain style that distinguishes this band. Antigravity blends various musical styles together with a simply form and evoking strong emotions. The arrangements represent, in the first place, a mixture of blended acoustic instruments with synthesized sounds, sounding more primal with some of the best that technology can deliver, giving this album a very personalized aspect.

However, the mixture doesn’t at all diminish the intimate tone of this album, nor does the fact that they issued two albums; it’s fair to say that it is this mixture itself that now offers us some new sound experiences. One of the highlights of this album is track 3, titled "Back to You" – a song somewhat reminiscent of Sonic Youth, especially when it comes to the version that these American icons’ rendition of the Carpenters’ song “Superstar”.

In a period where fear seems to be the main instinctive concern for many musicians, this duo seems to stay far from such territory and these releases certainly have sufficient power to reach audiences around the world, because these songs are timeless. If you like sounds that are somewhat subtle yet bold, you really shouldn’t lose any time – just go ahead and get yourself a copy of these two debut releases.
